Cycling family          April 2017

"Exceptionally clean accommodation in a great location for cycling. All mod cons and welcome provisions. And bike storage. We visited Hicks Lodge for the cycling and it was brilliant. Branston Water Park and up the canal to the Marina also great. 5*. Thanks Helena we all had a great time."

Three Generations       April 2017

"Thought the cottage was lovely & one of the nicest we have stayed in. We had not been to this area before and enjoyed visiting it. Apart from other locations mentioned on this page, we also liked Tamworth Castle (and Conkers!!)."

Young family    February 2017

"Cosy, clean and functional - everything we needed for a family break! The cottage was perfect, just as advertised. It was well-equipped and easy to settle into. It was a lovely surprise that the beds were so comfortable and the small bedside lights in the bedroom with the two single beds were very useful for the children. The provision of a washing machine and a dishwasher made things very easy for us and the garden was nice and large. Having a couple of very nearby pubs made it easy to go out for a quick meal without it being too much of a palaver with the kids. The cottage is well-located for a range of local children's activities. Helena was very welcoming and helpful as a host. Very happy with our stay here and would definitely come again."

"Very warm and cosy cottage, particularly the wood burner, as the weather was a bit miserable. Even in February, the National Memorial Arboretum is well worth a visit and we would like to return in the summer months. The Queen's Head is very handy and the food is good."

Scottish Half Term      October 2016

"What a beautiful cottage and location. The accommodation is clean and very comfortable, one of the best we have ever stayed in. Helena was very welcoming and friendly. While in the area we visited  the Adventure Farm Park - it was very good, Twycross Zoo - it was excellent, Drayton Manor and Thomasland - amazing, Conkers - disapointing and the Grand Central Railway - well worth visiting. We ate out twice at The Queen's Head, friendly pub, good food. Hoping to return again in the near future."

Three Generations      July 2016

"Beautiful cottage and beautiful location. Helena was very welcoming and friendly and even supplied bread, milk, eggs and butter for our arrival! Location was perfect for all our actvities, Alton Towers, Drayton Manor and the Snowdome in Tamworth. Highly recommend the Queen's Head Inn across the road for food and welcoming atmosphere! Hope to return in the future, a great time had by all!"

"What a wonderful house, everything has been thought of. We had a brill time - enjoying Lichfield, the National Memorial Arboretum, Rosliston Forestry Centre and the brilliant food at the Appleby Inn - Mega!!"

Family holiday          August 2015

"We've had a wonderful week here in a part of the UK we didn't know well - but we have really enjoyed exploring. Our grandson (2) loved Rosliston Forestry Centre in particular. We've also visited some lovely National Trust properties - Calke Abbey was great for all ages  and we loved Stoneywell. Lichfield Museum was wonderful on the one wet afternoon! We had great meals out at the Cricketts Inn and lovely picnics in the sun. The garden was a wonderful haven to sit in and sketch and play.Thank you for a well equipped and comfortable cottage - we'd recommend it to anyone!"

Family from Australia    July 2015

"Thanks so much! 50 Mill Street has been the PERFECT base for us for 2 weeks while we are catching up with family and friends in the Burton area. The cottage had everything we could possibly need for our stay and the large garden was great for the kids. We even had a BBQ in the beautiful weather! We have had some great days out during our stay including Castleton, Matlock Bath, Drayton Manor, Beehive Farm, Rosliston Forestry Centre, Conkers and Barton Marina. (Mum also had a day shopping in the Bull Ring in Birmingham).

Thanks Helena for all of the information about the area and for providing such a clean and comfortable cottage. We will be back next time we visit England!"

Football family   June 2015

"Warm welcome on arrival to a lovely, well kept cottage. Perfect for our needs. Real ale enthusiasts will enjoy the National Brewery Museum. Our kids loved Conkers, although best on a warm day, and also Snibston Discovery Centre was great. Very nice but very large portions at Overseal Fish and Chip shop. Ideal base for a great holiday."

Family Christmas and New Year     December/January 2014/5

"A busy but very enjoyable & comfortable stay in this lovely cottage. Used to meet and visit family for Christmas & to celebrate the New Year together. It even snowed to the delight of our South Coast living relatives. Lots of lovely walks straight from the door and interesting to see the development of the new woods. Visited Alrewas National Arboretum, Lichfield for shopping & the cathedral, Rosliston Forestry centre & Burton on Trent."

"We really found the cottage to be comfortable and cozy with loads of equipment. No doubt some of the team will be back."

September family hols     September 2014

"We have had a fantastic week, great weather, beautiful property and garden that had everything we needed. The extra personal touches just made it more special such as the welcome pack of bread and milk etc as well as the hosts being so friendly and helpful in advising places to go and Andrew giving us top tips for a pub crawl to Burton. The places we have been to and could recommend are as follows:-

1) Football at Burton Albion £15 – Bus 22 to Burton and the best pub near the ground was the Navigation – very friendly and good food and beer. Got a taxi back for £8 as the last bus back is 6.15pm (be warned!). We also had a nice meal at Venezia in the centre of Burton.

2) Walked to the Forestry Centre at Rosliston about 1½ miles walk. Plenty for families to do and doesn't cost much – check this out if you have small children.

3) On the walk back from Rosliston we stopped at the Bull's Head for an excellent Sunday Lunch for about £8. Only thing is they only do lunchtime meals/nothing at night.

4) Bosworth Battlefield – a full day out for about £8 – museum plus a walk round the “battlefield”.

5) Lichfield – a lovely place not far away – great shops, a lovely park – another good family day out.

6) Cadbury World (Bournville, Birmingham). About 40 miles away – top tip – book online to save time and money. A great family day out.

7) Drayton Manor/ Thomasland. We took my 2 year old grandson here and he loved it – top tip book online in advance £20 adults (£36 if paying on the day). Also take your own picnic to save some more money.

8) National Brewery Centre (Burton). Guided tours at 11.00am/1.30pm - £8.95 including a free pint – not for the kids but any ale drinkers will enjoy it. Also try the Burton Bridge Brewery and the Coopers Tavern pubs as recommended by Andrew – both top notch old fashioned pubs (no sky sports etc!!).

9) The Green Man at Clifton Campville – if you go for a meal – go here!"

Short break      August 2014

"A really lovely short stay for us. The cottage was ideal for our needs and thoroughly well equipped - Thank you. We had a great wander round Barton Marina and an amazing time after we hired bikes at Hick's lodge near Moira. We hope to be back again."

Family holiday    August 2014

"We have had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and are sad our holiday has come to an end! The cottage is the best we have ever stayed in  -- beautifully clean and with great thought given to providing all equipment and information that we could ever need. The girls (4 year old twins) love the garden and have settled incredibly well in our "holiday house" helping to make for a relaxing time. We very much hope that we will make a return visit. Thank you!!!

Working Break    May 2014

"A very lovely stay. The cottage was utterly perfect for our needs and provided us with comfort, a great location and a fantastic break away. We spent the weekend exhibiting some rare television props from the TV series "TUGS" and really enjoyed the Moira Canal Festival. Hope to return soon. - The Star Tugs Trust."

Family break       April 2014

"A very enjoyable stay - lovely cottage very well equipped and spotlessly clean. We would definitely come back! Thank you!"

Family do     March 2014

" We have all enjoyed the time spent in the cottage which we hired to house us for a family party held over the weekend. It is very well appointed and equipped for a large number of people. The whole place was spotlessly clean and warm and the log fire was an extra treat in the evening. Many thanks. It is lovely."

Family break   January 2014

"We have had such a great week at the cottage - thanks so much! It was so lovely to “come up the road” and enjoy some of the beautiful England we have on our doorstep. The cottage is so well equipped, comfy and cosy - a real “home from home”. We felt really relaxed here. We will have to re-book during the summer months so that we can make use of the lovely garden!

Our favourite place locally was the National Forest Adventure Farm - perfect for our age kids (3.5 and 1.5) even in the winter months. We were a little disappointed with “Conkers” - we thought it was expensive for what you got and a little overrated. We thought that if you want the nature/walks/den building etc then save your money and head for Rosliston Forestry Centre - £2 parking all day and they have a great play area, small indoor play area (extra charge), café and an exhibition area too! Definitely worth a visit!

We also loved our stroll around Barton Marina. The children enjoyed painting some ceramics on board a barge. It was a little expensive but really good fun! Joe painted a jeep and Em painted a bear which are being fired in the kiln and we pick up tomorrow. They are shut on certain days though so check before you go! Think it’s called “The Mug Tug”. Another fun few hours was spent at Beehive Farm – a few animals and ride on tractors etc. You can feed the animals for £1.

The only downside is that the holiday hasn’t been long enough! So…… we will be back!

Thank you so much! We will recommend you!

P.S. Mum said thank you for the lovely birthday card!"

Family holiday   August 2013

"What a superb cottage, well equipped. Attentive host in Helena. Provisions very gratefully received. Highlight of the week for me was Calke Abbey. The highlight for our grandson was the Farm Adventure. The pig race was very entertaining. Week went too quick. Lack of computer meant books being read and my first jigsaw done in years. Would highly recommend this cottage. Perfect location for us with friends and relatives nearby"

Note from the owner: Wifi will be available from September 27th 2013.

Three ladies from America   August 2013

"Thank you Helena for a lovely 2 weeks in your comfy little cottage, it really felt like home from home. Learning the ins and outs of the washer, cooker and dishwasher was a bit of a challenge, but fun. Our friends' BT phone and his wifi password was a life saviour as we are 4000 miles form home and his Sat Nav also helped navigate the windy lanes. The weather also behaved so all in all a wonderful holiday."

Family get-together    July 2013

"A cosy, clean cottage. In an excellent location for us when meeting together to visit family in Branston for a special birthday celebration. We had the benefit of very hot, sunny weather so the garden was lovely - my grandson enjoyed playing in a bowl of water! 13.5 duvets much too hot, so we slept using the duvet covers only - worked a treat! Thank you - my grandson didn't want to go home.               PS Sorry about the broken glass. The tin opener was a mystery to the 3 of uswho tried to open a tin of beans - the tin opener beat us! No wifi: Lovely!!!"

Family from Canada    June 2013

"Lovely cottage-enjoyed surrounding attractions. Only thing missing was wi-fi pity!"

Owner response:

We like to think of our cottage as a country escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. A place to relax, explore the surrounding countryside and attractions. Therefore we have decided not to incorporate internet connection into the home.
We live nearby and therefore we are very happy for our guests to use our home computer if internet is required. Indeed we offered on this occasion.
There is the other option of guests bringing their phones with
internet connection or a dongle if they would like wifi in the

Comments from 2 of the children:

"There was lovely and comfy sofas and beds. Although we didn't use the garden, it had lots of space to do stuff in. I loved the log burner and the house was nice and warm. I also loved the carpet in the bathhroom. It was a real treat!"

"The house was really good and nice. I recommend Drayton Manor (Thomasland), Conkers and Cadbury's World (book in advance). The DVD player kept going silent and it was hard to get it going. However all in all, it was a brilliant house."
